Producer, Engineer, Musician, Songwriter (Kansas, John Entwistle, Leslie West )
In Laramie, Wyoming, the unlikeliest of places, NY transplant Jim Roberts owns and operates the state’s premier music production facility, Timber Canyon Studios. Set out in the middle of open acreage in Big Sky Country, Timber Canyon is like Shangri-la for those looking to not only make music, but to be inspired. Roberts got here with the desire to slow down and chuck the hustle and bustle of city life – but still make great music!
Jim spent a couple of decades in the New York studio scene, making records, doing post-production work for film and TV and even writing his own published music.
In the studio, Jim has worked with Steve Walsh (Kansas), Joel Kosche (Collective Soul), Steve Luongo (The John Entwistle Band/Torque/Rat Race Choir), Mark Hitt (Torque/Rat Race Choir), Glen Velez, Bill Evans, Nick Di Paolo, Gary Portnoy, Joe Franco, Laurie Larson, Jock Bartley (Firefall), AJ Morra, Ryan Hoyle, Scott Cresswell, Jon Hammond and many others. Jim’s work with Steve Luongo led to working with the late Leslie West (Mountain), Brian Johnson & Cliff Williams (AC/DC), Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), and Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow) on various projects. Jim’s collaboration with JDM Music, Joed Tracks and The John Does led to song placements on Good Morning America, Men in Trees, NUMB3RS, ABC World News Now, Good Day New York, Guiding Light and various shows on ABC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, PBS, NBC and several feature films and national ad campaigns. He is represented by both ASCAP and BMI. Jim has been a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences for 25 years and is an active committee member of the Producers & Engineers Wing.
And, he’s been a big supporter of Vanguard Audio. His V13 and V44S (x2) are on regular duty for the majority of Jim’s session work at Timber Canyon.
Says Jim:
“When I first got the V13, I shot it out against a few of the classic vintage tube mics, and not only did it hold its own against them, but for this particular song, it beat them! I genuinely believe Vanguard mics will be future classics. They sound phenomenal on nearly everything: vocals, acoustic guitars, drums, just about anything I can throw at them!”
